Good screen habits remain the foundation of prevention, but emerging research suggests that astaxanthin may provide additional nutritional support for people experiencing screen-related visual fatigue.

What Is Digital Eye Strain?

Clinical Research in Children with Digital Eye Strain

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included 64 children between 10 and 14 years of age. Participants used digital screens for at least four hours per day and experienced mild-to-moderate symptoms of computer vision syndrome.

The children received either 4 mg of astaxanthin per day or a placebo for 84 days.

Compared with placebo, astaxanthin supplementation was associated with greater improvement in both ongoing and task-induced digital eye-strain symptoms.

The researchers reported improvements in measures related to:

Not every outcome improved significantly. The study did not find clear between-group benefits for measurements such as visual acuity, refractive error, near-point accommodation, near exophoria, or immune markers.

The findings therefore suggest that astaxanthin may support visual comfort and certain aspects of visual function, but it does not correct eyesight or replace glasses, myopia management, or professional examinations.

Research in Adults

Astaxanthin has also been studied in adults exposed to digital visual stress.

In one randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 60 healthy Japanese adults between 20 and 64 years of age took either 9 mg of natural astaxanthin or a placebo daily for six weeks.

Participants completed a 60-minute video-game task on a portable digital device to create temporary visual stress. Researchers assessed near vision, functional visual acuity, and pupil-related measurements before and after the task.

The clearest effect was found among participants aged 40 and older. In this subgroup, astaxanthin appeared to reduce deterioration in near visual acuity following the screen task.

The results suggest that astaxanthin may help preserve focusing performance during digital-device use, particularly in middle-aged adults whose accommodative function may already be declining.

However, the study was small, the intervention lasted only six weeks, and the most notable result came from an age-based subgroup rather than the entire study population. It should therefore be viewed as promising rather than conclusive.

What Do the Studies Tell Us Overall?

The available research suggests that astaxanthin may help support screen-related visual comfort, but the type of benefit may differ by age.

In children aged 10–14, 4 mg daily for 84 days was associated primarily with improvements in subjective acute and chronic eye-strain symptoms.

In adults, 9 mg daily for six weeks appeared to help protect near visual performance after screen exposure, particularly in people aged 40 and older.

Together, these studies suggest possible benefits for:

  • Tired or strained eyes

  • Temporary focusing fatigue

  • Screen-related visual discomfort

  • Dry-eye sensations

  • Maintenance of near visual performance

The research does not show that astaxanthin:

  • Prevents or reverses myopia

  • Corrects refractive errors

  • Permanently improves eyesight

  • Replaces corrective lenses

  • Treats serious eye disease

  • Eliminates the need for screen breaks

Larger and longer independent trials are still needed to determine which people are most likely to benefit and what dose is most appropriate for different age groups.

How Much Astaxanthin Was Used?

Dosage should be based on the population and product rather than applying one study dose to everyone.

Other adult eye-health studies have commonly evaluated amounts in the range of approximately 4–12 mg per day.

These figures describe research doses, not universal treatment recommendations.

A child should not be given an adult astaxanthin dose simply because it falls within a commonly marketed supplement range. Parents should speak with a pediatrician, pharmacist, or other qualified healthcare professional before giving astaxanthin to a child.

Astaxanthin Should Complement Healthy Screen Habits

Even when a supplement is helpful, daily screen habits remain the most important part of managing digital eye strain.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something approximately 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This gives the focusing system a brief opportunity to relax.

Blink more frequently
