Astaxanthin is best known as the red carotenoid responsible for the colour of salmon, shrimp, and other marine species. Beyond its natural pigment, it has attracted scientific interest for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating properties.

Early human research suggests that astaxanthin can support immune health by protecting immune cells from oxidative stress, helping regulate inflammation, and influencing several components of the body’s immune response. These findings are promising, although larger and longer clinical trials are still needed to determine how these biological effects translate into everyday outcomes such as fewer infections or faster recovery from illness.

Why Oxidative Stress Matters for Immunity

The immune system depends on a carefully controlled balance between free radicals and antioxidants.

In a randomized crossover study, runners consumed astaxanthin for four weeks before completing a demanding 2.25-hour running session. The study found that supplementation countered exercise-related decreases in several plasma proteins associated with immune defence. However, it did not significantly change muscle soreness, muscle damage, or the rise in numerous inflammatory mediators after exercise.

These results suggest that astaxanthin can support selected aspects of post-exercise immune recovery, but it should not be presented as eliminating inflammation or preventing all effects of strenuous training.

Can Astaxanthin Prevent Colds or Infections?

Current evidence does not establish that astaxanthin prevents colds, influenza, COVID-19, or other infections.

Review articles have proposed that its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can be relevant in conditions involving oxidative stress and excessive immune activation. However, these discussions are largely based on biological mechanisms, laboratory research, and studies measuring biomarkers rather than clinical infection outcomes.

Astaxanthin should therefore be viewed as a nutrient that can support the cellular environment in which the immune system operates, not as a treatment for infectious disease.

A Supportive Part of a Healthy Lifestyle

Immune health depends on many factors, including sufficient sleep, regular physical activity, stress management, adequate protein, and a varied diet containing essential vitamins and minerals.

Astaxanthin can complement these foundations by helping protect cells from oxidative stress and supporting a balanced inflammatory response. It should not replace nutritious food, medical treatment, vaccinations, or other established healthcare measures.
