Using microalgae allows manufacturers to produce concentrated astaxanthin without relying on large quantities of seafood. It also offers a direct, plant-based source suitable for vegetarian or vegan formulations when the capsule and other ingredients meet the same standard.

What Is Hawaiian Astaxanthin?

Hawaiian astaxanthin generally refers to astaxanthin produced from microalgae cultivated in Hawaii. The region’s sunlight and climate can support algae cultivation, and several established producers operate there.

However, “Hawaiian” describes geographic origin rather than a separate form of astaxanthin. It does not automatically establish purity, potency, or overall quality.

Shoppers comparing Hawaiian astaxanthin with products made elsewhere should examine the same practical details:

The label should make the source clear. Look for terms such as “natural astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis” rather than relying only on the colour of the capsule or an image of salmon.
