Astaxanthin can be paired with lycopene or krill oil, but the logic behind these combinations is different. Lycopene and astaxanthin are both carotenoids, while krill oil is primarily an omega-3 source that naturally contains a smaller amount of astaxanthin.

Lycopene and Astaxanthin: Similar Family, Different Sources
Lycopene is the red carotenoid associated with tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit, and guava. Astaxanthin is produced by certain microalgae and enters the marine food chain through salmon, trout, shrimp, krill, and other aquatic species.
Neither carotenoid converts into vitamin A. Both are fat-soluble and have been studied for antioxidant-related roles, but their structures, distribution in the body, and research areas differ.
Lycopene research frequently focuses on tomato-rich diets, skin responses to UV exposure, and cardiovascular or prostate health. Astaxanthin research commonly examines skin, eyes, exercise, and oxidative stress.

An astaxanthin lycopene supplement may be designed for broader carotenoid coverage rather than to deliver two versions of the same nutrient.

Krill Oil and Astaxanthin: A Natural Combination
Antarctic krill naturally provides EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, and astaxanthin. This explains why krill oil has a reddish colour and why astaxanthin often appears in its product description.
In this combination, the main nutritional purpose of krill oil is usually to provide omega-3 fatty acids. The naturally occurring astaxanthin is a smaller component.
Its concentration can vary according to the krill material and extraction process. One compositional study found substantial differences in astaxanthin, phospholipids, and omega-3 content among krill oils produced through different extraction stages.
Does Krill Oil Provide Enough Astaxanthin?
Do not assume that krill oil supplies the same amount as a dedicated astaxanthin supplement. Some krill oil labels state the astaxanthin quantity, while others list only krill oil, EPA, DHA, or total omega-3s.
In one recent human trial, each krill oil capsule contained 100 micrograms of astaxanthin. Four capsules therefore supplied 400 micrograms, or 0.4 mg, which is much less than the 4 mg to 12 mg commonly found in dedicated astaxanthin supplements.
Other krill oil products may contain different amounts or include added astaxanthin. The actual label is the only reliable basis for calculation.
Choosing Between the Combinations
Choose lycopene and astaxanthin when the goal is a multi-carotenoid formula and both ingredients are present in meaningful, transparent amounts.
Choose krill oil and astaxanthin when EPA and DHA are the primary goal and the naturally occurring carotenoid is an additional component. If a measured astaxanthin intake is also important, determine whether the krill oil provides enough or whether a separate supplement would duplicate other ingredients.
People with crustacean allergies should avoid krill oil unless an appropriate healthcare professional confirms suitability. Anyone using medication, preparing for surgery, or managing a medical condition should also review an omega-3 combination with a pharmacist or clinician.
The strongest combination is not the one with the longest ingredient list. It is the one that clearly states what each serving provides and matches the intended nutritional purpose.
