Astaxanthin’s Effects on Mental Health and Behaviour
Mental well-being is influenced by a complex mix of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Among the biological processes receiving growing attention are oxidative stress, inflammation, neurotransmitter signalling, and mitochondrial health. Astaxanthin is notable because it can cross the blood-brain barrier, allowing it to reach neural tissues. This distinguishes it from many compounds that cannot readily enter the brain.
Once present in neural tissue, astaxanthin has been studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as its potential effects on mitochondrial function and neuronal signalling.
Astaxanthin and Anxiety-Like Behaviour
Some of the most recent evidence comes from animal research.
A 2026 study published in Frontiers in Pharmacology examined astaxanthin in male rats using established behavioural models of anxiety and depression. Astaxanthin reduced anxiety-like and depression-like behaviours, with the 10 mg/kg dose producing particularly notable effects.
The researchers also explored possible mechanisms. When certain receptors were blocked, including GABA-A, muscarinic, and opioid receptors, some of astaxanthin’s behavioural effects were reduced. This suggests that its influence may extend beyond antioxidant activity to pathways involved in neurotransmitter signalling.
Another animal study published in Koomesh examined mice exposed to ethanol, which increased oxidative stress and anxiety-like behaviour. Astaxanthin supplementation improved several behavioural measures while also increasing glutathione and antioxidant enzyme activity in the cerebral cortex. These findings strengthen the proposed connection between antioxidant defence and behavioural responses.
Possible Effects on Depression-Like Behaviour
Preclinical research has also explored astaxanthin in models of depression-like behaviour.

Researchers have proposed that these effects may be related to reductions in oxidative stress and inflammation, along with changes in brain signalling pathways.

One study involving 28 healthy adults reported improvements in measures related to depressed mood, mental fatigue, and overall mood state after natural astaxanthin supplementation over eight weeks. Improvements or favourable trends were also reported in tension, anger, and confusion.
Other clinical research has examined astaxanthin-containing supplements in relation to mental fatigue. In one randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, participants receiving astaxanthin together with sesamin showed better recovery after demanding memory and attention tasks.
Because some studies used combination supplements rather than astaxanthin alone, the results cannot always be attributed specifically to astaxanthin. Nevertheless, they support continued research into its possible relationship with mental energy and emotional well-being.
Antioxidant Defence May Be Part of the Explanation
One consistent finding across several studies is astaxanthin’s effect on antioxidant systems.
In the 2026 rat study, astaxanthin increased catalase and glutathione, while reducing nitrite concentrations. In the ethanol-exposed mouse study, supplementation increased glutathione and antioxidant enzymes such as GPx and GST.
These changes matter because oxidative stress can disrupt neuronal membranes, mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter balance, and inflammatory signalling.
By helping reinforce antioxidant defences, astaxanthin may help create a more favourable cellular environment for normal brain function.
Beyond Mood: Mental Fatigue and Cognitive Function
Mental health and behaviour also depend on cognitive performance, energy, and resilience to fatigue.

Other studies have reported improvements in recovery from mental fatigue.
